FAQ
R & S LENS RING Installation
DidYouKnow
UNRULY Lens Rings and Cases are cut from solid aluminum for ultimate strength and durability!
Before you begin there are a few things you need to know:

  • Round lens rings are shipped with the front and back pieces screwed together to protect the threads. You must unscrew the two pieces before installation.

  • Round and Square lens rings do not come with mounting screws. You will use your existing GoPro lens ring mounting screw with both rings, unless you are mounting your lens ring to the HEADCASE PRO, then you'll need to use the small black machine screws that were provided in your HEADCASE PRO package.
Step 1
Thoroughly clean metal lens rings and o-rings with water or rubbing alcohol to remove any debris. Pay particular attention to the front and back o-ring grooves of the metal ring for any particles, which can cause leakage.

Tip
Q-Tips may leave behind fibers. We recommend using a micro-fiber cloth for final cleaning.
Important
If you are mounting the UNRULY Lens Ring on the GoPro Clear Case for use with HEADGEAR, you must install the clear case inside the HEADGEAR before installing your lens ring.
Tip
You can better protect your UNRULY lens ring from salt water damage by oiling the surfaces with a light amount of the included silicone or a rubber-safe oil. Gently rub the silicone or oil into the anodized surfaces and remove any excess sealer to prevent dust collection.

Step 2
Gently apply a moderate amount of silicone lubricant to both o-rings (front and back) with clean finger-tips, and avoid getting any particles on the o-rings. Properly lubricated o-rings should appear shiny, with no obvious silicone build-up or irregularities.

Tip
It's wise to keep extra o-rings and glass on hand in case of damage or loss. Replacement kits are available on the UNRULY website HERE.

Step 3
PREPARING THE GOPRO CLEAR CASE
Prepare the GoPro clear case surface by removing the 6x Philips screws, black lens ring, rubber grommet and the glass dome. Store these parts in safe place for reuse.

Thoroughly clean the clear case surface around the lens mount with water or rubbing alcohol.

Note
You will be reusing the 6x screws to mount the UNRULY lens ring on the GoPro clear case.

Step 3A
PREPARING THE UNRULY HEADCASE PRO
Prepare the surface by gently cleaning with a damp towel or micro-fiber rag. HEADCASE PRO is a watertight, not waterproof case, so there is no need to apply silicone lubricant unless you want to be absolutely sure that no moisture enters the rear of the lens ring.
Thoroughly clean surface
Note
If a watertight seals is wanted, please follow the instructions above for GoPro clear case lens ring mounting.
Important
To insure proper installation of the back o-ring, always place the o-ring on the case first, not inside the back groove on the lens ring.
Important
Be careful not to overstretch o-rings or risk tearing!

Step 4
To install the back o-ring, choose the smaller o-ring and gently pull it between two fingers until tight and hold for 5-7 seconds. The o-ring is now slightly relaxed and ready to install. If properly relaxed, the o-ring will easily slide around the raised disc on the clear case, or HEADCASE PRO, that encompasses the 6x lens screw holes.
Carefully stretch back o-ring

Step 5
Once the back o-ring is installed, place the UNRULY Rubber Donut into the groove where the GoPro dome and rubber grommet normally sit.

Important
When installing any UNRULY lens ring, be sure the logo is oriented upright and located at the bottom of the ring, to assure proper alignment.
Note
If installing the Square Lens Ring, be sure the side cut-out is properly aligned around the front button.

Step 6
Gently place the back lens ring onto the o-ring and donut. If the o-ring is properly seated, the ring should drop into place and sit firmly against the raised disc on the camera case and seal loosely around the rubber donut. If not, gently remove the back ring, carefully re-stretch the o-ring, replace and try again.

Important
If installing an UNRULY lens ring on the HEADCASE PRO, you must use the included machine screws, or you will cause permanent damage to the threaded holes.
Note
To minimize reflections in your glass filter, we recommend using a permanent marker to color the stock GoPro screw caps black, before installation.

Step 7
Once you are confident the o-ring, donut and back ring are properly installed, secure the back ring in place with the 6x GoPro lens screws, or use the black machine screws if you are installing a lens ring on the HEADCASE PRO. Secure the screws in place until tight.

If you see breaks in this black line, tighten the mounting screws, but be careful not to strip the holes. If this fails to seal the o-ring, remove the lens ring mounting screws, the back ring and o-ring, clean and repeat the steps above.

Important
To assure a waterproof seal on the GoPro clear case, observe the o-ring from inside the case. You should see a narrow, deep black line around the o-ring surface where it comes into contact with the clear case - this indicates a seal with the clear case.
Tip
Failure to establish a waterproof seal on the back lens ring is often solved by removing the ring, cleaning and trying again.
Note
It's not uncommon for the first water test to fail with new o-rings.

Step 8
Once you have installed the back lens ring and you are confident the o-ring is maintaining a proper seal, proceed to installation of the front o-ring by lubricating and placing it into the groove on the front-side of the back lens ring.

Important
When installing the front o-ring in the Square lens ring, start by inserting the o-ring in the lower left corner and gently work your way around the perimeter until inserted. Avoid stretching the front o-ring.
Tip
When handling glass filters, always hold the glass with your finger tips and avoid touching the flat surfaces.

Step 9
Carefully remove the included glass filter from the protective plastic bag and gently peel away the protective coating covering the anti-reflective side of the glass. This coated side should face inward when mounting. Gently position the glass filter, coating side down, onto the large o-ring and center.

Step 10
Whether installing the Square or Round lens ring, gently place the front ring over the glass.

Step 10A
For Round lens ring installation, gently place the front lens ring onto the back lens ring and glass then align the threads by rotating the ring in a counter-clockwise direction until level.

To secure, carefully twist the ring in a clockwise direction, using caution not to misalign and damage the small threads. Proceed to screw on the front lens ring until the underside of the lens retainer lip engages with the glass surface. Continue twisting until you see a deep black seal line form between the glass and the o-ring. When this line fully encompasses the o-ring against the glass, without gaps, stop turning the ring.

Important
DO NOT overtighten the Square Lens Ring screws or risk breaking the glass filter.

Step 10B
For proper Square Lens Ring installation, gently place the front lens ring onto the back lens ring and glass then gently secure in place with the 8x black machine screws provided. Be sure to balance the pressure on the glass by tightening the screws in a corner to corner manner and use great caution, keeping equal pressure on all screws.

Proper installation is complete when you see a deep black seal line form around the circumference of the o-ring beneath the glass, with no gaps. Again, DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the screws or you risk breaking the glass filter.

Step 11
CLEAR CASE WATER TESTING
To ensure that your lens ring and clear case are watertight, upon completion of installation, submerge the sealed GoPro clear case, WITHOUT CAMERA, in a bath of cool water at least 10-12 inches deep. Place torsional forces on the lens ring and give it a good workout.

If you discover leaks with either of the o-rings, try to identify the location of the leak, remove the case from the water, uninstall both lens rings and o-rings, carefully clean all surfaces thoroughly, re-lubricate the o-rings and reinstall the lens ring as instructed above.
Note
If installing the Square Lens Ring, be sure the side cut-out is properly aligned around the front button.

Step 12
When you are confident that your new UNRULY Lens Ring is properly installed, properly orient the lens cap, snap into place and store your GoPro inside a protective, neoprene UNRULY SOFT BAG

Pro Tips
Tip
Did you know that you can use standard filtration gels with UNRULY Lens Rings? If you're shooting underwater, just cut out a circular or square piece of your favorite gel and place it between the front lens ring and the glass. If a watertight seal isn't necessary, you can also install the gel between the filter glass and the o-ring for extra protection!
Tip
The UNRULY Square Lens Ring was designed to work with standard 2"x2" glass filters. The filter glass we provide is 3mm thick, while standard glass filters are 4mm thick. We designed the Square lens ring with this in mind by providing you with 8x front ring mounting screws that accommodate either thickness of glass, and we machined in a wrap-around skirt on the Square ring that prevents light leak!
Tip
Did you know that the UNRULY Round Lens Ring was designed to work with standard 55mm screw-on filters? To maintain a low profile and prevent vignetting, any round filter can be installed backward - on top of our filter glass, or you can entirely replace our glass and front ring with the 55mm filter of your choice!
Tip
Did you know that you can use the UNRULY Round Lens Ring with the GoPro glass dome and a standard 55mm filter at the same time? Just replace the Round glass filter, front o-ring and the rubber donut with the GoPro dome and rubber grommet. Screw-on your favorite round filter and shoot. And your camera is still waterproof!
Tip
Did you know that you can also use the GoPro dome and grommet with either UNRULY Lens Ring? Just leave out the flat glass filter and front o-ring to use your UNRULY lens ring as a dome protector with cap - with no vignetting.
